“I love wildlife photography because it allows me to make a personal connection with the animals I photograph. When the animal looks right into the camera and we make eye-to-eye contact, a bond is created that is almost magical.”

A decade ago I was fortunate to be able to spend five days with the mountain gorillas of the Virunga mountains in Rwanda. We encountered four different groups and the time we spent in their presence was truly memorable. Great apes hold a special fascination for me; they are very intelligent – something you immediately appreciate when you start to observe them and, more importantly, they observe you – and they are incredibly gentle animals. It’s no exaggeration to say that being with these gentle giants, and their wonderful young, is a life changing experience. The agonies of the steep trek up the slope of the volcano through thick bush are soon forgotten!
